A celebratory look at the whole school community and the learning and growth it inspires。
Becky,
A beautiful book that is a reminder of how schools can be places and spaces to build a community of learners。 John Schumacher writes a special school story which will be read over and over again, year after year。
Kailey (Luminous Libro),
School is not just a place for learning。 Children grow and change as their teachers help them to see their potential。 The children discover their love of art and music。 They make friends and help each other。 They make mistakes and try to make amends。 They fail at some things and try again。 School is a place for exploration and community。 This is such a sweet picture book all about the joys of learning in a school and all the different people who work there。 It's not just teachers who have an imp School is not just a place for learning。 Children grow and change as their teachers help them to see their potential。 The children discover their love of art and music。 They make friends and help each other。 They make mistakes and try to make amends。 They fail at some things and try again。 School is a place for exploration and community。 This is such a sweet picture book all about the joys of learning in a school and all the different people who work there。 It's not just teachers who have an impact on the students。 The parents, librarians, coaches, janitors, principals, and all the staff join together to create an atmosphere of learning。I loved the cute illustrations with a diverse group of students! We see the kids put on a play, learn music, play on the playground, do science experiments, and all kinds of fun thing。 Every page is colorful and full of smiling faces!Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a free and honest review。 All the opinions stated here are my own true thoughts, and are not influenced by anyone。 。。。more
Carmen,
I received a copy of This is a School by John Schu and illustrated by Veronica Miller Jamison from Penguin Random House Canada in exchange for an honest review。This is a book that celebrates schools and the amazing place that it can be for all who are part of the community。 It is a place to learn, make mistakes, celebrate, and create。 This will be a great book to share with young children as they begin school - or perhaps are soon to return to school after a few years of virtual learning。
Alex Baugh,
I never thought about school as a community when I was a student。 Consequently, I never really felt that I was part of a community bigger than myself。 However, as a teacher, I realized just what a large, important community school really is。 And I think it is important for kids to understand that and that they, too, are a vital part of it。 And that is just what this book tells young readers。 Using the simplest of sentences, it begins with a kid。 Each following page places the kid in different sc I never thought about school as a community when I was a student。 Consequently, I never really felt that I was part of a community bigger than myself。 However, as a teacher, I realized just what a large, important community school really is。 And I think it is important for kids to understand that and that they, too, are a vital part of it。 And that is just what this book tells young readers。 Using the simplest of sentences, it begins with a kid。 Each following page places the kid in different school situations - the school building, the class, the hall and describes what happens in each place。 But school isn't just those things, it's also a diverse growing community where kids can find support, can learn, play, work, succeed and even make mistakes at times。 This is an ideal book for children just getting ready to go to school, but also a good reminder for current students that they in a thriving community with many supportive adult helpers。 The illustrations, done in watercolor, acrylic paint, and digital collage, are colorful and reinforce the message of the text。 I am really looking forward to sharing this book with my young readers who will all be starting school next fall。 。。。more

This is a wonderful book about what school is and can and should be。 The diversity represented here is wonderful。 Lovely illustrations! So much positivity and light including all kinds of people within the school as well as all kinds of activities。 This book is really about the school as not only its own community, but as part of the larger one。

This book begs to be read aloud to an eager circle of kids! Then, read again and again。 A joyful portrayal of an inclusive, nurturing school community。
Noelle Plotke,
I enjoyed the vibrant colors of the book。 The diversity was clear and an important element that I felt was done in a manner that made being "you" normal and accepted。 I will definitely be recommending that we add this book to our bookstore shelves。 I enjoyed the vibrant colors of the book。 The diversity was clear and an important element that I felt was done in a manner that made being "you" normal and accepted。 I will definitely be recommending that we add this book to our bookstore shelves。 。。。more

My favorite thing about this introduction to school is that it celebrates not only the activities that happen inside its walls, but also how they help children grow — which is sometimes from not having answers or feeling stuck, or even making mistakes — and how that growth happens communally。 Words and pictures compliment each other perfectly (and their voice together reminds me a bit of the classic-feeling books of Anne and Lizzy Rockwell), bright and cheerfully kid-focussed with a plenty of de My favorite thing about this introduction to school is that it celebrates not only the activities that happen inside its walls, but also how they help children grow — which is sometimes from not having answers or feeling stuck, or even making mistakes — and how that growth happens communally。 Words and pictures compliment each other perfectly (and their voice together reminds me a bit of the classic-feeling books of Anne and Lizzy Rockwell), bright and cheerfully kid-focussed with a plenty of detail for readers to pour over on every page。 。。。more
